When I Was Alone

When I was alone
I used to wonder when you were ever comin' home
And I sat at my windowsill
And I used to freeze at every breeze came over that hill.

And when darkness would fall on me
I could hardly breathe, hardly see, hardly be
And when I was alone
I used to always wonder when you were ever comin' home.

And when I turned eighteen
I thought I'd find my way to where I thought you ought to be
And when I packed my things
No I didn't forget those melodies you gave to me.

And when I set foot on that road
I remembered how you told me it was cold
But I was so alive with your energy
I picked up my feet and let them carry me.

And I walked on, and I walked on
And I passed folks and roads and on and on, and on and on and on
'Till my shoes grew thin and my mind it blew--
And I wondered, not for the first time
How you got through.

And when I was alone
I used to wonder when I was ever comin' home
Am I ever gonna be on the other side?
Wonder who's sittin' alone, watchin' me,
Thinkin' they'll try.
